A Note from Our President
|
Hello fellow members of WICT New England.
It is my honor to serve as your 2010 Chapter President and to welcome you to a new year of learning and making connections.
During
my tenure, I look forward to meeting many more of you and understanding
how our organization can serve you better. I am very proud of the
outstanding work done by the 2009 Board of Directors and I am happy to
report that the 2010 Board is off to a great start!
As
we begin a new year, thoughts often turn to resolutions or personal and
professional goals. I recall some valuable advice Jill Stauffer, VP
Customer Care at Comcast, shared during the lunch panel discussion at
our 2009 program "How to Stay Essential and Centered in Today's
Business Environment." Jill suggested, when work and life
get busy, make sure you have something on your calendar to look forward
to. That makes a lot of sense to me; I've already got (plenty of)
things I'm looking forward to in both the short and long term.
What will you do with the year ahead of us?

We are proud to continue our
partnership with area Dress for Success organizations throughout New
England this year.
As
part of every WICT professional development program we will have a
collection box available to encourage our members to donate clothing
and accessories that will help disadvantaged women enter the
workforce. The donation needs vary for the different Dress for
Success chapters, so we will make sure to provide those details in the
correspondence we send out about the program. Items collected
will be donated to the local Dress for Success chapter.

Hello and Happy New Year! In 2010 we will focus on sharing information on the many foundational components of Health and Wellness. The focus will center on a more holistic approach to our members' well being and life balance.
Holistic health
is actually an approach to life. Rather than focusing on illness or
specific parts of the body, this ancient approach considers the whole
person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment. It
emphasizes the connection of mind, body, and spirit. The goal is to
achieve maximum well-being. With holistic
health people accept responsibility for their own level of well-being,
and everyday choices are used to take charge of one's own health.
Holistic
health is an ongoing process. As a lifestyle, it includes a personal
commitment to be moving toward the right end of the wellness continuum.
No matter what their current status of health, people can improve their
level of well-being.
We begin the New Year with a focus on meditation -- what it is and how to begin. Meditation
means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation.
"Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is
meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other
distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation.
To get you started, try these basic meditation instructions.
If you follow them carefully and practice them regularly, you may start
noticing some subtle (or not-so-subtle!) positive changes in your life.

VA - Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) announced its chapter
award winners. Receiving top honor, Chapter of the Year, is the WICT New England Chapter.
WICT's
Chapter of the Year award is presented to the top performing chapter as
measured by WICT's Model Chapter Business Plan scores in areas such as
programming, governance and membership. With programs such as
Strategic Leadership in Action and Leading Change & Process
Improvement, WICT New England embodied the WICT mission by offering
meaningful professional development opportunities tailored to meet

Chawla, WICT New England's 2009 President, noted that every successful

The Program Directors are planning exciting new programs all based on the WICT Touchstones. Our Mentor Program is set to start mid-March (see below). We
are planning several exciting Professional Development events including
a webinar on Being Strong and In Control, a seminar on Powerful
Presentation Skills, a team building day partnering with a local area
non-profit organization to help with their charity, and a seminar
on The Story of Success as it relates to your life and career. We look forward to new speakers and dynamic topics to educate and involve our members this year. Please contact Laurie
Cote, Programs Chair, to share a topic you feel is relevant
and would like to see covered in one of our programs.

|
Is this the year you commit? Develop yourself... or give back as a mentor. |
|
"A
mentorship is a supportive relationship established between two
individuals where knowledge, skills and experience are shared."
(Laura Curtis)
This
year our program will run from March to October, with a kick
off and closing event, as well as informative webinars throughout the
year.
Mentors
and protégés will be given guidelines, along with information on
building rewarding relationships. Participants are encouraged to
find a plan that works specifically for each team involved.
The
success of the partnership is determined by the contribution of each
member. Please ensure you are able to provide the time needed to make
the most of the program. Applications will be available on the website in mid-February.

Chances are, if you're not already on Facebook,
Twitter, LinkedIn or MySpace, then you're likely being harassed by your
son or daughter, friend or next door neighbor to set up a profile, and
start "Social Networking".
Truth
is, social-networking sites have become increasingly important in
creating and maintaining relationships and connections with others in
today's fast-paced environment. Social Networking has also taken the next step and become a valuable business tool as well. Beyond
the casual friendship connects and photo sharing capabilities, these
tools offer all of us a great opportunity to utilize the resources to
make our community, businesses and ideas visible to a wider world.
Most
people know about social networking but not everybody knows the
benefits or uses it to its full advantage. The main reasons
people "socially network" are to communicate with current friends, to
build new relationships and, of course, to reunite with long lost
friends. The more you explore, the more uses and benefits you can find
for social networking and soon you'll be spoiled by the new world at
your finger tips.
Now is the time to increase your network, visibility and businesses opportunities, all from the comfort of your own home. In
the coming months' newsletters, we will guide you from the bottom
up in creating your "Social Network" Personal Identity. Click here to begin your journey with Social Networking 101: Facebook.
....and look for next month's edition of Social Networking 101: LinkedIn.
I recommend you take 5 minutes to watch this VERY interesting video on The Social Media Revolution.
