Members of the Mentor Program recently gathered on the banks of the Charles River for a team build rowing experience. Our intrepid group had the opportunity to train on indoor machines before getting their feet wet out on the water. The morning session was led by the skilled staff at Community Rowing (CRI) in Brighton, MA who patiently guided the team of sculling novices. Once training was complete, the group was then split up into two 10 oared ‘barges’ where pairs practiced their newly acquired skills on the open water. The highlight of the day was a race between the teams which provided the participants with some spirited camaraderie and competitive fun. Following the race, the group was treated to a luncheon with chapter president, Holly Burgess.

It was a great way for the group to connect, network and spend time with their fellow program members. It was a memorable day for all the participants. The experience pushed the pairs both physically and mentally, as everyone needed to match their stroke with the other rowers, listen to their coach, and follow instructions. As CRI’s website explains, “Leaders must learn to be excellent followers, followers must lead, and everyone must do it together.” Isn’t that what a mentoring partnership is all about?
